That Girl

I always tell my friend Aileen that she is the Ultimate Geek’s Girlfriend. Why, this lady is an artist, web designer, graphic designer, photographer, and comic geek all rolled into one. She’s a businesswoman who’s the creative genius behind Big Ben Watches. Plus, she’s beautiful and has a body-to-die for.

She’s got a bookshelf full of comics and books. And when I say comics, hindi Archie Comics, Pugad Baboy, or Pupung ha. She reads Marvel, DC, and whatever real comics are read by the guys. (See, I don’t really know the stuff she reads.) Oftentimes when we talk about comics, movies, and literature, I get lost. She mentions some character in a book or movie, and I have no idea that I have to ask my husband. Haha! So I’m not a wide-reader as I claim to be. Meanwhile, my husband whom I think is a nerd knows what she’s talking about.

Ying is into guy stuff too! Sabi ko nga sa inyo ultimate girlfriend talaga. She’s a gamer. She also watches UFC. Naman! I can’t relate. Whenever she comes to our house, she and Josh would end up talking about what’s on TV, sports, or movies. Hindi ko alam ang pinag-uusapan niyo, let’s talk about girly stuff na lang. Hihi.

She’s unpredictable. Actually, that’s what I love most about her. I didn’t expect we’d be close. I could still remember the first time I saw her. I was at the lobby of our previous office in Greenhills…scared for it’s going to be my first real job. This tall lady, all dressed up and made up suddenly entered. I said to myself, “Naah, she’s too kikay for me. Baka maarte.” And then I found out she graduated from an all-girls college. “Naku hindi talaga, she’s like let’s make tusok-tusok the fishballs, you know.

Her pets Chewey and Riri

But then we became friends. I don’t know how and when but we clicked. Walang bahid ng kaartehan, mas maarte pa pala ako. Then I found out she has pets. Migulay, ayoko ng pets sa bahay. I like dogs but to really care for them…hindi ko ata kaya. She has a cat and a dog now. She’s giving Noah that kitten. She had hamsters before. Hamsters! Ayaw ko sa daga!!! Oo nga, ako ang maarte. I went to UP but I act like let’s make tusok-tusok the fishballs.

I even invited her to join me in my new company when I left. I always admired her old website and so I thought she would be a great addition to the web team. True enough, she became our first female web designer. She codes by hand—notepad lang!

I love the fact that we’re almost the same height. Hihi. When we walk together, parang heaven lang kasi pareho kaming matangkad. Hahaha! I could borrow clothes from her and shoes too! Yun nga lang, the clothes are a bit too tight for me because she’s so slim. (Bakit ba, I’m a mother!)

She’s body conscious in a good way. I get kikay tips from her. She inspired me to get fit and healthy. I couldn’t understand before why and how she could eat tuna or steamed chicken all the time but now I understand because that’s our diet now. Hihi.

Aileen is such a strong woman. Her experiences in life have made her the woman that she is right now– strong and independent. She could be the poster child for Destiny’s Child song “Independent Women” because she is. She’s from a rich family in the south but after college, she started living on her own. If I were her, I would probably spend my parents’ money traveling and enjoying single life before I work or settle down. But this girl Aileen, is one humble person. I respect her for she has achieved so much on her own.

She sells vintage luxury watches and manages an international business. Her clients are from all over the world. I wish to share with you her business story but that’s gonna take me a lot of time. Sabihin na lang nating, she was able to buy a house, a lot, and a car just buy selling watches. The perfect example of a hobby-turned-into-business. She’s not really on her own because she has her beloved Andykins helping her. 🙂

A friend is always loyal,
and a brother sister is born to help in time of need.
Proverbs 17:17
(NLT)

I have Aileen to thank for the house that we live in right now. It’s more than two years ago when I was desperately looking for a new apartment. I posted my ‘need’ on Facebook and she replied immediately and said there were two empty houses in their compound. To make the long story short, we became neighbors soon enough. As in 10-inch wall lang ang pagitan.

I love the fact that I have a neighbor friend, kikay girlfriend, and sister in one. She’s been a blessing to me and my family. I love it that she cares about the little details in my life. She knows me more than most of my girlfriends now. She’s been with me through the worst and has seen me my during my ugliest (read: wearing pambahay with no ligo, no makeup, etc.).

I don’t see her as much because she’s busy studying comic illustration. She dreams of becoming a comic book illustrator. I only got to understand the comic industry because of her. I thought one only needs to be good in drawing but it’s more than that.

Here was her first try on doing a Romance-themed comic page:

Reah: I miss you too! I have a surprise for you.
Joshua: What’s this?
Reah: Credit card bill mo.
Joshua: Aatakihin ata ako sa puso!!!

Imbento ko lang ang dialogue. Hahaha! It’s currently my cover photo on Facebook. I just love it!

I hope she gets to  fulfill her dreams of becoming a comic book artist. I know she will. It’s just a matter of time. 🙂

Shopping with Johnny Air

Shopping with Johnny Air I’ve been meaning to post about Johnny Air but couldn’t find the time. But then a friend asked me if I tried buying from Amazon and having the item shipped to the Philippines. Of course! I’d like to think I’ve mastered the art of online shopping but I only use the services I know work and are reliable.

They say that online shopping is #morefuninthephilippines but I disagree. No thanks to the negative image of the customs, the fees, high tariffs, and the hassle of going to the post office. I also don’t like the idea of having to go to the bank to pay for a product you saw something online. I understand there are smaller online shops out there who only accept bank deposit payments, LBC, Western Union, or Cebuana Lhuillier and that they have no credit card. But if you are thinking of setting up an online store, might as well plan on how everything can be done ONLINE–which means the buyer won’t have to go out of the house to pay. (Kaya nga online shopping, dapat may option to pay online, diba?)

The local online marketplace is still new and I admire the likes of eBay.ph and Multiply for advancing their efforts. I just wish something can be done with the high customs fees.

I mentioned before that I buy stuff from the US. How? I have them shipped via Johnny Air. I learned about this shipping service from Chuvaness. I tried it for the first time more than two years ago, in March 2010, when I had to order Noah’s Ark party supplies for Noah’s dedication. Continue reading Shopping with Johnny Air

Restaurants in Kapitolyo

I don’t claim to be a foodie. I love to eat. I just cannot do a lot of eating right now because we’re still on this Healthy Living. My husband and I, we still eat out occasionally. I don’t always keep track of where we go and what we eat but I try to take photos first.

Our current favorite local food destination right now is Kapitolyo in Pasig. I thank my cousin Christian and his wife Claire for their suggestions. They live in Kapitolyo so they know and have tried almost all restaurants there.

I am amazed at how Kapitolyo turned out to be a foodie’s favorite destination. Our church is located nearby so I am familiar with the area. Before, there was only the Three Sisters. We tried Cafe Juanita already and when we started having our Care Group in the area, we were introduced to some of the best kept secrets of the neighborhood. So we’ve been missing a lot!

I’ve only been to a few places but we’re planning to try all restaurants in the Kapitolyo area before the year ends. Okay, that seems impossible but we work from home so I guess we could try at least two food places each week starting this Saturday. Yes? Please!

And so I got so giddy and excited when my friend Sharm shared this:

How to Adopt a Kitten

So we’re adopting a kitten. It’s Noah’s first pet but it’s going to be a family effort.  I really hope this “Catty” will be a very good pet.

I believe God is the one directing the events in our life. I’ve been thinking of getting a cat lately and my neighbor finding an abandoned one the other day was no accident. It was meant to happen.

My friend Ying shared the story of how the kitten was found by her boyfriend Andy– in a comic strip! I love all her drawings but I especially love those related to Noah and me.

By: Aileen Oracion

Aileen shares the story of how the kitten was found:

Marc Andrei saw an abandoned kitten in a busy street the other day. He walked past it at first but as he continued home, he couldn’t imagine how it would survive if it rained all of a sudden or if it was swept into the street & run over b
y a car. It wasn’t until he got home & into the gate that he decided he was going to go back & get it.

There were 2 “tambays” seated along the sidewalk then. The kitten was right in front of them but they just ignored it. They were so surprised that he came back & took it. He felt their eyes on his back as he walked back home (as if they couldn’t believe what they just saw with their own eyes).

The kitten’s with us for now but Reah & family will be adopting it 😀 It will be staying with us until it’s healthy & ready enough to “defend” itself from their playful son, Noah (who also happens to be my godson)!

My first reaction to the story: Kasi naman ang laking tao pero animal lover.  Ang cute. Hehe.

You see, Andykins, as my officemates and I call him, is a big guy. He’s the protector-go-to-guy in our compound so you won’t think he cares about animals. This neighbors of mine really know how to care for their pets. Their cat RiRi is gorgeous while Chewey is a very good guard dog. Chewey and Noah…well, they’re not exactly best friends but that’s because Chewey gets jealous of the little boy. I hope someday they can become friends. 😀

We’re adopting a kitten!

I received a call from my friend and neighbor Ying this afternoon saying Andy picked up a poor kitten and asked if we wanted to take it. I was having second thoughts because that meant another responsibility. I’ve been wanting to get another fish or a pair of love birds for Noah but I keep procrastinating.

I asked Josh and he just looked at me but then I still agreed to adopting the kitten. Eeep! I know Noah will love the kitten because he’s very friendly with the stray cats my brother feeds from time to time. Husband finally said okay but that I’d have to do the cleaning myself. Okay. Fine.

Actually, I’ve been thinking of getting one too the past few weeks but I haven’t told Josh yet. A cat is smaller and is easier to take care of than a dog, right? Josh said we’d get a black Labrador when Noah is a bit older, not just now. I once mentioned if we could adopt Ivanna, the yellow Labrador, because Noah likes him so much and I like Ivanna too. This yellow lab was my companion when I would run around the village early in the morning or in the evening.  It was dear to me..she still is but I had to let go of playing with her when I learned I was pregnant.

Here is Noah and Ivanna:

I wanted to get a white Persian cat like Snowbell in the movie Stuart Little. Noah loves the movie but I really can’t accept the fact that the lead is a mouse—a mouse! But I find Snowbell cute and name suits it perfectly.

I had a white cat before which I named “Kim”. It was my first pet. My very own. Sadly, she went missing one day. I never found out what happened to her. She looked like this:

In two weeks, we’ll be taking home the kitten. Noah and I visited the kitten and he loved it! The little kitten still looked thin but my friend will be taking care of it for two weeks before Noah could bring it home. My son still has no idea that the kitten is his but I know he’s already in love with it. He kept on squishing, touching, and putting it back to its small basket. When we were about to leave, he picked up the kitten and put it inside the cage. I couldn’t understand what he was saying because he still speaks gibberish but he seemed to be telling the kitty to eat and stop whatever it is planning to do. Why, the little pet was trying to get out of the cage. Noah actually said “TOPS” — that’s how he says ‘stop’. Hehe.

I am excited for Noah but I dread the cleaning part. Hopefully, we’d train the cat to be well-behaved. I have no idea how but I have to start searching. Of course, I’d love to hear from cat owners too. Ying has RiRi, this gorgeous gray stray cat, so I have her to teach us.

I wasn’t able to take a picture of the kitten but it looks like this:

We can’t figure out if it’s male or female but it doesn’t matter. We’re still thinking of a name but I want Noah to give it a name. The cat at my parents’ house– he calls Catty but I don’t want that. Hahaha! We’ll see… 😀

Of Vintage Leather and a Big White Heart

Top: Hand-me-down from my sister | Shoes: Christian Siriano for Payless | Bracelet: Cuteture Fierce Pearls in Gold by Jenni Epperson | Kate Spade iPhone Case | Bag: Vintage Mulberry Tan Crocodile Leather Messenger Bag

It was a fun and long weekend. I missed church Sunday morning but I managed to attend the 4PM service. I quickly dressed up for this because I was already running late. Grabbed a pair of leggings and this old brown top with a big white heart design. It’s one of my favorites. It’s a hand-me-down from my sister so I have no idea where she got it.

Arm candy was actually a necklace from Cuteture. I purchased this in 2009 when I just gave birth. I was in the mood for some kikay shopping because I felt so ugly then. I bought this at a Mommy Bazaar in Rockwell.

Zoom in on the leather shoulder bag. The gorgeous leather bag here is vintage. I told you I love vintage. It’s another eBay find. It’s been with me for more than four years already and since I’m a leather bag lover, this is another favorite. I specifically searched for a Mulberry because back then, I was crushing on a Mulberry Alexa. I saw this one and fell in love. Fortunately, this has no foul, leather smell because the bag came out in the 80’s. Unlike the dark brown Cambridge Satchel which my husband hated, this one passed his smell standard. :p

Remembering Steve

It’s no secret that I’m an Apple fan girl. It’s true when they say, “Once You Go Mac, You Can Never Go Back”. My first Apple gadget was a blue iPod Mini which I asked my cousin to buy in Singapore. I fell in love with the blue iPod. I got another green iPod Nano, an iPod Shuffle, and then the white 13-inch MacBook which opened my eyes to the wonders of OS X.Then came the iPhone 3G, the iPad, this 11-inch MacBook Air, and the iPad 2. What Oktoberfest means to my husband…

It’s not what you think. Josh doesn’t drink. He never enjoyed drinking and hates the taste of beer. And now that he has gout, there really is no way he’d come to love it. While most guys (and girls) look forward to October because they can drink all they want to celebrate Germany’s most popular beer festival, Oktoberfest means time to buy something for his music.

Every year, the local music store Yupangco, holds a grand promo which they call as Handog Sale. I regularly receive newsletter from the company because I want to be updated with the products. Every year, Joshua buys something. Mura nga kasi. And since because he is not a shopaholic (thank God!), rarely buys stuff for himself, and is a hard-core musician, I have to give in to his request. Haha! He doesn’t buy every year but he just enjoys checking out the store.

He sold his old amp and he bought himself this Marshall MG60DFX Amplifier a month before I gave birth to Noah last 2009. Last hurrah na daw:

Noah and Daddy Joshua jamming

STING Back to Bass Tour Live in Manila 2012

STING Back to Bass Tour Concert in Manila, Philippines | December 9, 2012 – 8PM | SM MOA Arena | Ovation Productions

Bakit ngayon ko lang nalaman to?! I’m online most of the day and yet I missed this one. VIP tickets are already sold out! Not that I am willing to spend that amount of money but it only means this is MAJOR! Between me and my husband, Josh is the one who spends on concerts of artists he really likes.

I’m not really a concert goer because I don’t appreciate crowded places and I don’t like standing up when watching something. Tamad kasi. Except if tickets are free or we’re supporting friends. I don’t get excited over artists and musicians either coming to Manila but this is STING! Apparently, husband didn’t also know about his Manila concert so he got excited too. Naman!

Question now is: Anong bibilhin naming ticket? Continue reading STING Back to Bass Tour Live in Manila 2012
